Colin Matthewson is a premiere trumpet player, whose singular tone and artistic breadth are in high demand across California. His skill set is diverse, allowing him comfortable diversity in style, and he has performed to critical acclaim in genres including classical, jazz, musical theater, rock and roll, dixieland, and even traditional Mesopotamian and Mexican settings. He has had the honor of performing with many exceptional ensembles, including the California Youth Symphony under the direction of Maestro Leo Eylar, the Mesopotamian Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro John Kendall Bailey, the Folsom Lake Symphony under the direction of Michael Neumann, the Golden State Wind Orchestra under the direction of Marlon Ramirez, as well as the Townsend Opera Players and Fresno Grand Opera under the direction of Maestro Ryan Murray. He has also played in backing ensembles for the likes of Terell Stafford, Dave Pietro, Donny McCaslin, Tim Ries, Geoff Keezer, and Wayne Bergeron, and has recorded with bands such as Doombird, The Infamous Swanks, and By Sunlight. He is currently a member of professional brass quintet Brassy!, as well as the Grupo Valle de Santiago, a Mexican ensemble covering styles ranging from current top hits, jazz, Latin, and traditional Banda music.
Colin also has considerable experience in theater and opera, and his skill as a pit player is constantly sought after. He continues to be called to play multiple shows at theaters such as Finnish Temperance Hall, Green Valley Theater Company, Woodland Opera House, Townsend Opera Players, CSU Sacramento Drama and Sierra College Drama.
Holder of a bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from CSU Sacramento, Colin has had the privilege of studying classical trumpet under Gary Dilworth and jazz under Steve Roach. He has not limited his artistic output solely to trumpet, however, and has both performed and recorded on piano, guitar, mandolin and percussion. In keeping with his drive as a multi-instrumentalist, Colin also maintains a private studio for trumpet, guitar and piano students ranging from 5-65.
